I thought it would be fitting to end our school year with my welcome letter from last August. Read it to your child and see if they remember it and also ask them if this sounded like their school year.
It's truly been an honor serving as your child's teacher this year. Years from now we will look back on March- June 2020 school year with many stories and memories. I hope one of those memories will be that I was there for your child and tried to make the learning meaningful and also in a fun way. Thank you again and please stop by my classroom next year and say hi. Welcome to Mr. Brad Olson’s Classroom! I am very excited to meet you and start the school year. Third grade is very different than second grade. In third grade you will be expected at times to do some homework. You will also be expected to learn your multiplication facts of 2-9. We’ll start off the year on those facts slowly, but then build up speed and stamina as the year progresses. Now if this sounds like a coach talking to an athlete it might be because I was a high school athletic coach for 26 years. During that time my teams won numerous championship titles. The reason why my team was so successful was they worked harder and longer than the other teams. We all worked to achieve the goals we had set for ourselves. When you enter Pleasantview Elementary each day I want you to come with a positive attitude and a goal in mind. That goal might be that you want to become a better reader or better at doing a certain type of Math problem. I want you to feel that you became stronger than the day before. The harder you work, the better you will become. Our classroom will be like a Brain Fitness Center. We will have expectations in our room. The expectations are for you to be responsible for your actions. If you stay on the PATH you will have a great year. If you decide not to follow the expectations then it makes it difficult for those around you to learn. Now for a little bit about me. I came to Sauk Rapids in 1994 after spending nine years teaching in southern MN and also in North Dakota. I am a graduate of the University of North Dakota with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education. I also received my Masters in Education from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. Traveling is a passion of mine. I have been to nearly all 50 states and to many foreign countries. China, Austria and Hawaii are some of my favorite places that I have visited. You are the newest member of my team and together if we both commit to work hard we’ll see some outstanding results by the end of May. Come ready to learn and with a good attitude. See you soon! ZOOM MEETING TUESDAY : NEW TIME IS 9:30 A.M. Information on returning the ipad is included in this message today. So now what happens without the ipad? Well if I were the parent I would establish a time and place where silent reading will take place for a total of 40 minutes a day. This could be several short sessions or split into two parts. If your child still has room in their journal I'd encourage them to continue to write. Years from now it will be very interesting to them to see what they wrote about the last part of this year. I would also try to do some things with Math daily. Simple questions involving real world problems. Look over a receipt and ask them to round the numbers to the nearest ten or hundred. Cooking or baking involves a lot of Math and this would be a fun time to show fractions with the measuring cups. I'll have another post next week so make sure you come back . iPad RETURN INFORMATION It was so much fun at our last Zoom meeting playing a drawing game of Pictionary where the students had to guess the picture. I've included a one of my drawings from the game. The best part of the game was hearing the kids laugh again. I mean who wouldn't laugh at my scary drawings! (It's an igloo.) This is another big week of learning so please help your child set their schedule so they have an opportunity to get as much done as possible. It was so nice to visit or leave messages with all of you last Friday. Thank you again for the overwhelming support that you are giving me and your child. I truly feel that we are providing your child with the best possible education despite the circumstances we've been given.
I have heard of reports from some rural areas in other states where internet is not possible or of places where schools didn't have devices such as ipads or laptop computers for their students. We are truly blessed with being in a district where education is a frontrunner in the area. As we enter May I am reminded of the race we are running. If you remember back to my analogy back in January that the school year is like a running race. We all start off strong and fast doing everything we can. The students had the whole summer off and were eager to begin. In the middle of any race people tend to slow down and that often happens in the classroom as well. Now with the finish line in sight we need to pick up the pace of finishing strong. This summer will be extremely long. In fact even with having a normal school year this summer vacation would be the longest we have had in the past years because Labor Day is so late. The school year is slated to begin on September 8th which means that there will be a lot of days without formal education. What I'm trying to emphasize is that please see to it that your child is completing all their work daily. If it means going into the weekend to finish it they should. Remember the ZOOM meeting takes place each Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. The link will be provided about ten minutes prior to the meeting. This week we will divide into teams and play a game called Pictionary. |
