I hope everyone enjoyed their break and are ready to hit it hard until the next vacation. This time of year can be very busy for families and I hope everyone can still take time to pause and enjoy the season and also keep some of the learning routines we have established. Last week I sent home a parent letter regarding the next unit in Math. Please take time to read it over and see what type of lessons your child will be doing in Math. Reminder, no school on Friday due to Teacher/ Inservice Day.

This week there will be no Spelling list.
During this week of Thanksgiving I'm reminded of where I was teaching just one year ago. We were in our second week of Distance Learning and it would last for the next several months. I am so thankful for teaching in person this year and that I have supportive parents again this year. I am thankful that when teaching I have a group of students who care enough about the person next to them that they are on task and respectful. I am thankful for the teamwork displayed by this group of students this year and that they are helpful when doing work in pairs. The camaraderie is strong in our room and I'm excited as we close in on the end of the first trimester. During the break from school my hope for you is to reflect on what you are thankful for as an individual and as a family. Be sure to share with your child your thoughts this week. Have a Happy Thanksgiving. SPELLING WORDS: circus, summer, serve, occur, return, thirteen, dangerous, caterpillar.
This is a big week for us as we end Unit 2 in Math. We will be testing on Friday and it covers 2 step problems along with multiplication and division story problems. Please continue to have your child practice their math facts daily. Also reading 20 minutes a night is a top priority. SPELLING WORDS: alarm, import, charge, ornament, starving, forward, forgot, carnivore.
The other day while my class and I were walking outside for a break we looked up and saw a flock of geese. I used it in a Math lesson the following day. I'm constantly looking for examples of Math in our real world. Speaking of looking for ways to use teachable moments. Once I ran into some students at Walmart after school and showed them how to select candy by checking the weight and determining the cost per ounce. As I was finishing my mini lesson the sister of my student suddenly appeared around the corner and was annoyed that her little brother wasn't finished with his candy selection. She exclaimed, "Mr. Olson...it's a Friday afternoon at Walmart, and you're teaching Math!" When I turned around, behind us a small group of adults had gathered and were soaking in the lesson, and it was fun to watch them pull out their phones and use the calculator to determine their savings and best buy options. I showed your child the following video and to me this sums up what TEAMWORK looks like. I've been impressed with the class and their willingness to work together and help one another. I have said it several times that this group is a special group. It reminds me of teams that I once coached that had common goals to work hard and enjoyed each other's company. Those teams that worked together were very successful because of those traits. When you have time please take a moment to watch the video and discuss it with your child.Copy and paste the following web address and watch with your child. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hazitrxzhPk From Mr. Olson....
