If your child still has their February Reading Calendar at home please return it this week. This month our goal is the same as last month on trying to read for at least 25 minutes a night or 175 minutes for the week.
I sent home a paper ruler last week. Our goal is to learn how to measure items to the nearest 1/4 of an inch. These paper rulers have less markings on them than the standard rulers which makes it nice for students just learning this concept. For some extra fraction practice please show your child the gas gauge in the car some time. Also you can introduce them to the measuring cups in your kitchen. Another concept we are working on is telling time. During the time after school have your child tell you what time it is on an analog clock if you have one. ***Be sure to sign up for a Parent Teacher Conference today. It will be done on ZOOM again this time. Details can be found on the district website on how to sign up.

Welcome to Day #100 of the school year! Technically the school will have been open that many days, but I don't even want to calculate how many days we've actually had class. We have however are making very good use of our days. Our motto is, "Don't count the days....make the days count."
Our Reading and Math small groups have been going extremely well. The students who need more help with the lesson are getting it and those who have mastered it are getting some advanced lessons. Very soon there should be some information regarding Parent Teacher Conferences in March. I am not sure on the format yet but stay tuned and be sure to sign up right away when you see the notice. With a short week upon us we're still going to forge ahead with a spelling test and our next unit in Reading. In Math we are continuing with fractions. It's a fun unit and there are so many opportunities at home to share fractions. Please show your child the gas gauge on the car this week and explain the fractions.
We will be starting a brand new math unit this week. It's all about fractions and mixed numerals. It's a perfect unit to show your child fractions in the kitchen. Measuring cups and also cutting food into equal pieces would be great examples. My favorite would be having pizza night and asking your child what the fraction is as you cut the pizza once. Then again and again.
The weather is suppose to be extremely cold so please make sure they are wearing warm weather gear. I'm guessing we'll be indoors for recess all week. There is no school on Friday, Feb. 12 and again the following Monday and Tuesday. Please make sure your child is reading daily during the break and also working on their flashcards. Your child can bring Valentines to school on Thursday if they would like. If they want to make their own box at home they can. I will supply those that don't have boxes at school some materials to make one here. Welcome to February! Last week your child took tests in Reading and Math. I will be sending home those results today. It was nice to see the progress.
I'm including a sample of what it will look like. When you look at the sample it shows that the student was 11 points below the Grade Level Target in September with a score of 480. The Target score was 491 so that is -11. In January their score was 498 with a Target of 499. That means that child is just 1 point below the target so it's a -1. That growth shows the improvement even thou the child is still scoring below the target we would like for Grade 3. I'll go over these results in March during our PT Conferences, but I wanted to share now with you where your child is currently performing. To help your child I'm asking everyone to spend at least 25 minutes a night on reading to self. In the classroom We are setting aside a 30 minute block for more reading. In Math and Reading I'm meeting in small groups to help those that are performing below the grade level target. For those performing above it they are meeting in smaller groups getting enrichment material at their current reading level. It's been going well, and I can see a lot of progress from all the students. Your child is also bringing home a February calendar. Each night total up their minutes read. You can also put your minutes read on the same calendar. Challenge your child to see who can read more each day. |
