Wow! That's Mom upside down. Well here we are with day #2 of Distance Learning. Since I have heard almost nothing today from families I'm assuming things are better today than yesterday. Thank you for your patience yesterday. It was just as frustrating for me as I had planned the lesson, uploaded everything and then to see within minutes that it wasn't working was a sad feeling. I heard it made national news that the schoology site went down numerous times. They are working on it so let's hope everything will work out.
I'm able to see what time of the day your child is working on their assignments and also how many minutes they are on line. I have said that whatever schedule is best for you to use that time. ASSIGNMENTS ON MATH During the school year prior to the virus the students and I would work problems together in class. At the end of the lesson if the student wasn't understanding it we would meet for some extra help. My advice for us now is to rewatch the lesson, pause it and work the problems. I've also included some videos from others who may teach it a different way. Also during the year a homework sheet was sent home with the parents looking it over to see how they were doing on it. There are no homework sheets now but once in a while they will have a workbook page to complete. They do not need to send me a copy of their finished assignment. I am doing assessments on their progress another way. When they go on to the Freckle app it shows me exactly who is understanding the assignments and also who needs some extra help. That is what I will use along with some quizzes and unit tests which are coming up to check the progress. We are all still learning how to use these tools and how to speak to children on a lesson that are not in the room. Remember they can pause the lesson, write down the example and then resume the lesson. They can also rewatch it which when I hear something more than once I seem to remember it better. Finally thank you to those who sent me some nice emails yesterday thanking the TEAM I work with for what we are doing. Those kind words are exactly what I will remember about Day 1 of Distance Learning and not that Schoology crashed. You're simply the best! From Mr. Olson....The Teacher of Champions!

Welcome to Distance Learning. Lessons will be available starting on March 30th, per the Governor's order for classes to begin on this date. I have spent a lot of time preparing the lessons along with Mrs. Martin and Ms. Young.
If you look back at previous blog posts you will be able to see how your child will receive their assignments. Your child's teachers have agreed that the material will be available starting at 8:00 a.m. each day. Some of us may even post the entire weeks assignments beginning at the start of the week. STUDENTS CAN DO THEIR WORK AT ANY TIME OF THE DAY OR NIGHT . However as we get going I will have a virtual room open on ZOOM certain days to meet with me so they can check in and we can talk. When we do ZOOM students should be dressed appropriately and not have any distractions behind them. SCHOOLOGY On this site there is a place called "News Feed." Please don't write messages there. Many students from other classes are posting, " hi" and similar things like that. That area is for teachers to post items. It is going to look different, but also some of it will be very familiar to your child. The key to success is to be patient and do what you're able to do. In looking at the calendar had we been in school to this point. There would only be 41 days left of school. The good news is that a majority of the key lessons have already been taught. However there are still some important lesson remaining. The beauty of these lesson online will be that your child can listen to it again if it doesn't make sense to them the first time. I've started to receive several emails, and I think what I'll do is try to post on my blog information that everyone will benefit from. Right now the best way to reach me is by email and I'll try to answer it in a timely fashion. There is no greater bunch of parents than you, and if I had to go through this situation again, I'd want them to be just like this team. Good morning. It was fun for me to hear the voices of the students last week. I really needed to hear from them again. I have been busy getting the DISTANCE LEARNING folder ready for your child in Schoology app on their Ipad. It's the same app they have used all year long so that should make it extremely easy for them. We have discovered that it's easier to access this through CLEVER which your child is very familiar with. If any of the jargon I'm using confuses you, just ask that 3rd grade Champion in the other room. They are very good at this.
All of the student's bags have been picked up or will get delivered soon so your child has access to their supplies. I would suggest once we get up and running to have the same place for them to do their daily lessons each day. It should be well lite and away from distractions. For Math they will need their notebook, Math workbook, pencil and Ipad. A ruler or tape measure will be used at times. Lessons will be organized by weeks. Everything will be kept in the DISTANCE LEARNING FOLDER. All of the student's lessons will be housed under Mr. Olson's name/course. Even their Reading and SSW classes are now under my name. If you should encounter tech problems there is a link for help. mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?pli=1#inbox/FMfcgxwHMPndvtznQdSLmcnqXQDZwvrV Once again we'll continue to learn from these experiences and everyone in the World is experiencing these changes. I'm choosing to Thrive and not just Survive during these days. From Mr. Olson...the Teacher of Champions Wow! Where do we begin to digest these past few weeks. There are a lot of questions and we're starting to get a few answers so be patient with the process. I'll be spending these next two weeks getting ready to teach your child on line in a variety of ways. A lot more information will be coming soon about that.
In the mean time it is my hope that they are continuing to read books, just like they did before. Practice their flashcards, just like they did before. Enjoy spending time with their family, just like they did before. Cleaning their rooms, well maybe that might be something they can start! ha ha I would love to speak to your child so if you see the number 320-258-1231 come up on your caller id, it is a call from me. Thank you and please give them a hug from me. I miss your child very much. We are starting a new unit in Math. The current unit covers: AREA/PERIMETER, EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS, MONEY AND TEMPERATURE. A parent letter along with vocabulary cards will be sent home on Monday. Cut the cards out and have your child look those over during the next few weeks study the terms.
Thank you for checking their gold sheet (homework) nightly. In class we have also been working on questions that are similar to the ones from the MCA test which will be given in April. Those sheets are green. CONCERT: TUESDAY 6:30 PM. Have your child to the classroom by 6:15 pm. Trimester 2 is complete! With just 56 days left in the school year, (Don't Count The Days, Make The Days Count) we are forging forward and plan on finishing the year with excitement and dedication. At our PT Conference I spoke about the progress of your child and I could tell the following week many students came back on fire for finishing strong. Please continue to encourage them to try their best. Work together with their classmates and as a team. And finally to stay on the PATH and follow the expectations.
Some important dates to remember: March 16 Music Concert March 19 Photo Day I'm sure you've been reading the information on ways to avoid getting sick but just wanted to mention it again.
