Reminder there is no school on Friday, March 9th.
I Pads: I noticed a student sharing a video he had made at home along with numerous family photos on his I pad. Later in the day the I pad didn't have enough memory to perform the test he was working on. I think we need to monitor more closely what your child is doing with the school issued I pad. It is intended to be a learning tool and I think this weekend you need to sit down and see exactly what has been downloaded or is in their photo gallery. At PT Conferences I gave you a pink piece of paper that included the apps they were suppose to use. I don't believe the video or camera was included in this area. The habits your child develops now with these tools will stay with them for a long time. Let's be sure they are using it properly. Homework: I accept very few excuses for homework not being done or returned. However, I have heard the best excuse ever this past week. One of my students took a trip to Maui Hawaii this past month so in December I buried his homework assignment on a beach. In order to find it I developed a treasure map along with math problems to help him find it. Well he found the area but it was under water when he arrived. I hadn't taken into account the fact that the tide in December would be different in February. The homework that he was to do was swept out to sea and is most likely washing up on shore of some remote island . My only hope that the child who finds it gets it done! :-)

Unit 5 has started which focuses on measuring the area and perimeter of shapes. Area is found by multiplying length x width. Perimeter is found by adding all the sides.
We'll also work on equivalence in fractions. A great visual would be having you cut something up like a candy bar. Cut a whole candy bar and dividing it into two parts. Explain that each part is 1/2. Show the two halves. Then cut the same bar in four equal parts and explain that 2/4 is the same as 1/2. Finally we'll work with temperature and reading a thermometer along with making change from a 1 dollar bill. The yellow homework sheets come home nearly each evening. Please continue to do those and get them returned the next day. Parent Teacher Conferences are on Tuesday, Thursday evenings and Friday morning. I look forward to seeing you all again.
Valentine's Party will be on Thursday. Students can bring them on Wednesday or Thursday. They can also bring their own beverage or snack for the party for themselves. Test on Unit 4 in Math. Measurement, fractions, data and telling time. I think the sickness has left the room. We have had a lot of students come down with the flu. Hopefully we are all back to full strength now. The theme for the week is telling time along with elapsed time. What a great time to share with your child on planning a meal at home and deciding what time to start cooking a meal if you want it done at a certain time.
We're also going to start working on data and making graphs. Here's a chance to show an example of a heating bill and compare it to one from a month ago. Graph the results and see the difference. We'll be doing that with mine and also comparing temperatures from around the world. PT Conferences are next week and I look forward to seeing you. |
