The other day while my class and I were walking outside for a break we looked up and saw a flock of geese. I used it in a Math lesson the following day. I'm constantly looking for examples of Math in our real world. Speaking of looking for ways to use teachable moments. Once I ran into some students at Walmart after school and showed them how to select candy by checking the weight and determining the cost per ounce. As I was finishing my mini lesson the sister of my student suddenly appeared around the corner and was annoyed that her little brother wasn't finished with his candy selection. She exclaimed, "Mr. Olson...it's a Friday afternoon at Walmart, and you're teaching Math!" When I turned around, behind us a small group of adults had gathered and were soaking in the lesson, and it was fun to watch them pull out their phones and use the calculator to determine their savings and best buy options. I showed your child the following video and to me this sums up what TEAMWORK looks like. I've been impressed with the class and their willingness to work together and help one another. I have said it several times that this group is a special group. It reminds me of teams that I once coached that had common goals to work hard and enjoyed each other's company. Those teams that worked together were very successful because of those traits. When you have time please take a moment to watch the video and discuss it with your child.Copy and paste the following web address and watch with your child. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hazitrxzhPk From Mr. Olson....
