On the first day I told your child that I had the best students in the building. Well I can honestly say that I also have the best parents/guardians as well! Your patience and support is outstanding and I am so thankful for what you are doing.
My hope is that this will be the last week of remote learning. During this next week we'll pick up the pace a bit as your child has adapted to the Ipad and the format of the lessons. Our schedule is located on the SEE SAW app. I usually open the room about 10 minutes prior to the class starting. I am amazed at how many are already lining up ready to get in and learn. Again, this is a special group of students and I foresee some great things from them not only this year but as they grow in their education. You have done some nice things with your child and I'm fortunate enough to get to lead them this year. Internet and technology isn't perfect. If your child misses a class, I have the 2:00 pm session open as a way to catch up or to come back for some extra help. Next week your child will start to see a few items posted to their SEE SAW account. I'm a rookie at that program so bear with me on using it. There will be some bonus Math materials called " SQUIRREL MATH." It's a bonus if they are able to figure it out . I like to have some challenge material included at times. Often it will be material that is coming up and I'd like to see who already knows how to do it. If they aren't able to complete it now it will be taught during the year. Stay safe and give your child an extra hug and let them know I'm keeping the room clean so we can defend our title of the "Golden Broom Award." Given to the cleanest classroom. From Mr. Olson.... The Teacher of Champions."

It's been nice having these days with the students and routines have been established. There was a little confusion on a few students part about Math homework. It's started in school and parents are to look it over each evening. This will give you an idea of what we are working on in school. Send it back with your child the next day and we'll correct it in class. There should be a sheet going home nearly every night. The nights we don't have one students should work on their flashcards.
If you received a good news phone call you should be extremely happy. I made several calls last week and I'm impressed with our start. It's a start and the important part is to continue the same amount of effort throughout the school term. Thank you once again for the fine support. If this week is anything like the first two days of school I feel this group will have a great year. We have started off very well and the students and I are getting to know each other. Routines are being established and my philosophy is that good habits repeated become the norm. I shared with my class that they are my team and the harder we work, the stronger we will become.
In Math our first concept is reviewing telling time. We're also starting with the multiplication facts of 5. Very soon they will be bringing home some flashcards. These will be left at home and should be reviewed often until they master them. My advice is to work on them right away. Many follow my advice and others put it off. Those who put it off will be overwhelmed very soon when they get their next set. In Reading our first topic is Covid-19. Our Reading series put together some useful material on the topic. Each evening a good goal would be to read for 20 minutes each night. Keep up the good work of returning the agenda and the take home folder. From Mr. Olson...the teacher of Champions! It was so much fun meeting you all last night. After I got home I was wishing students would begin today with classes! After meeting you and your child I know that I will be working with a winning team once again. Together we're going to set some goals for the year and a plan on how we will achieve that goal.
Each Monday this blog will have some new information for you. I'll send some reminders in an email at first and then I will hope that you are checking it on your own. Your child's agenda will also include some information which you should check each evening. When the Math homework sheet is sent home, look it over and be sure it's returned in the "blue take home folder." We may eat lunch outside on nice days. If you have a large beach towel please send it with your child so they sit on that. I'm really looking forward to this year and it is my hope that some day your child can look back on the year 2020-2021 and say that it was their favorite year of school.
